K-9 Crossroads is currently involved with 3 types of working dogs. These are:

Service Dogs - Hearing Alert Dogs - Ambassador Teams

Service Dogs:

K-9 Crossroads Service Dogs are specially trained to assist physically disabled persons by retrieving objects that are out of their reach, opening and closing doors, turning light switches off and on, finding another person, assisting ambulatory persons to walk by providing balance and counterbalance and many other individual tasks as needed by a disabled person. All our Service Dogs are rescued from animal shelters and are then trained to meet the specific needs of the individual. Our fully trained and tested Service Dogs can be identified by their hunter green vests. While in training, our Service and Hearing Alert dogs wear apple green vests.

Hearing Alert Dogs:

Hearing Alert Dogs assist deaf and hard of hearing individuals by alerting them to a variety of household sounds such as a knock on a door or doorbell, alarm clock, oven buzzer, telephone, crying baby, name call or smoke alarm. Dogs are trained to make physical contact and lead their deaf partners to the source of the sound. All our Hearing Alert Dogs are mixed breeds, acquired from animal shelters and are small to medium in size. Our Hearing Alert Dogs are required to have an orange collar, leash and vest.

Ambassador Dogs:

Ambassador Teams are owner/dog teams that have been thoroughly tested and screened for remarkably stable temperaments. These dogs are taken to various types of medical facilities, nursing and convalescent homes, etc. They provide therapeutic interaction with the patients in these facilities. Interaction with Ambassador Dogs have proven extremely beneficial to physically and emotionally withdrawn patients.
